One of the main reasons for trying to scale back the number of lanes is to protect the neighborhoods bisected by the BQE from car exhaust – neighborhoods mostly populated by lower income housing and working-class family areas. Work, home and school areas that are impacted from “significant vehicular pollution” according to a letter from more than a dozen representatives of these Brooklyn areas sent to United States Department of Transportation.
