Title 42 – a pandemic era law that expanded the ability to immediately expel migrants as a preventative measure against the spread of Covid-19 – is coming to an end.
The Center For Disease Control (CDC) has named May 23, 2022 as the official end date for Title 42.
While opponents of the law and immigration advocates have argued against it as being cruel and unusual treatment the reality is that it was in response to the pandemic and a way to try to mitigate any further spread or even mass outbreaks. But now, In an April news release, the CDC cited low COVID-19 levels in more than 95% of U.S. counties as a tangible reason to no longer need Title 42. The CDC also points to increased availability of tools to fight the virus.
